The decision to become a registered donor is an act of generosity and a symbol of hope for the 122,000 men, women and children in the United States who are waiting for life-saving organ transplants. Every 10 minutes, that waiting list grows and another name is added. Of those people waiting to receive the gift of life, over 2,300 live in Arizona. By registering as an organ donor, you have the potential to give the gift of life. One organ and tissue donor can save and heal up to 50 lives.

For many transplant recipients, receiving the gift of donation is a miracle. It allows them to do things they weren’t able to do before, such as walk, see and spend more time with their loved ones. Donation also provides many donor families with comfort knowing that their loved one’s gift saved and healed lives.

This April, the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System is joining other health care organizations throughout Arizona to participate in the Health Care for Hope campaign to share information about donation and encourage others to register as organ and tissue donors. By registering for the first time as a donor, or reaffirming your donor status, you can stand with us in support of donation.

Anyone can register to be a donor. There are no health requirements or age limits! More than 2.6 million Arizonans are already registered as organ and tissue donors and the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System wants all of our friends to join us in saying “YES” to hope and generosity by registering today!

Who does the family contact in the event of your death and what happens to the remains of the body?

    • April 29th, 2014 | Anonymous |

If the loved one should pass in the hospital, the hospital staff would coordinate the porcess through Donor Network of Arizona. In the event of a death at home, the family would contact the local mortuary who would in then in turn contact the Medical Examiner and Donor Network of Arizona. The body of the loved one is returned to the mortuary within 24 hours for visitation and viewing. Above all, Donor Network of Arizona works with the family to respect their wishes and treats them with respect and dignity.

Hi Benjamin, The family is not required to initiate contact in order to begin the donation process. When an individual passes away in a hospital, the hospital places a call to Donor Network of Arizona (DNA). Our staff then checks the donor registry to see whether the individual was a registered donor, and the donation process begins. During this time, DNA offers continued guidance and comfort throughout to the donor's family. After recovery, the donor's body is returned to the family. The body is completely restored by our team in a respectful manner. Restoration of the donor allows for the family to hold an open-casket funeral, should that have been the donor's wish. After the donor is returned to his or her loved ones (usually within 24 hours), the family may proceed with funeral and burial arrangements. -Donor Network of Arizona, Public Education Department
