Adrianna was born without her small intestines...

Adrianna was born November 1, 2008, without her small intestines. She could not eat like a regular infant so, in order for her to have a chance at life she had to be on total parenteral nutrition (TPN) and lipids. After being put in contact with a doctor that had performed transplants on children, Dr. Khalid Kahn, we were told that we would have to wait at least a year or for her to be 18 to 20 pounds in order to receive a transplant. Her first year of life was the hardest. She was in and out of the hospital for a two week minimum for what seemed like every other month. The year of being on the TPN and lipids had ruined her liver.

On November 8, we got a call that a transplant had become available. We were at UMC in Tucson, Arizona. They scheduled her transplant surgery for November 9. There were no guarantees that her body would accept the organs. We were in the waiting room for what seemed like an eternity. After the eleven hour surgery,  Adrianna received her small intestines, liver, and pancreas. She was taken to the PICU and remained sedated for the next 2 weeks with her abdomen not completely closed. Adrianna progressed much better than doctors anticipated. She was discharged from UMC on December 17, 2009.

Adrianna is now 4 years old and eats regularly. We are so grateful to the family that donated their loved ones organs. The picture that was included in this story was taken on the day of her surgery. Click here for the link from the UMC about Adrianna’s surgery.

Below is a picture of Adrianna as of a couple of weeks ago at her uncles house. She is enjoying school now. She'll soon be 9 in November. Words can not describe how thankful we all are for her gift of life.

I couldn't imagine not having this precious little girl around. Adrianna is the happiest thing ever and is such a joy. Thank you to all donors out there because without you Adrianna would not have the life she does!
